Old Dogs and New Tricks

Dragged kicking and screaming into the 20th century.

Technically, it’s old bitches.

So. I’m teaching myself Adobe’s InDesign and Photoshop. Probably the only person who doesn’t do Photoshop. Even my aged mother uses it. Of course, she was also the one who shamed into learning to use a computer. “If I can do it, so can you.” Nuthin’ I could say to that.

I’m learning InDesign because one, the person who formatted my books isn’t doing that anymore. Two, I figure I can save a little money, hey? What prompted this was my decision to add teaser material to the back of my books, and to harmonize the books in The Underground series. The fonts, in particular. When I had the covers redone, it didn’t occur to me the interior design should be changed, too. When I realized it, I didn’t really care because there was only supposed to be the two books. But now it’s a series because my fans want to see more. So, between The Underground and Invasion, there are something like 3 or 4 different fonts between the title, my name, and the text. Since uniformity is the order of the day in a series, welp, I got work to do.

Photoshop? Because the formatter designed the chapter dividers, and they’re in Photoshop. I didn’t have Ps when they sent it. I do now. So I have to convert.

I do not have any intention of becoming super proficient at InDesign and Photoshop. I’m not going to design brochures, corporate presentations, or anything else for hire. I got enough shit to keep straight, and can barely do that now.

But they’re still useful skills in this day and age, and almost a necessity for me. Time to leave my technophobia behind.
